Runnersystemer, often translated as "runner systems," are a crucial component in plastic injection molding. They are essentially the channels within the injection mold that guide molten plastic from the nozzle of the injection molding machine to the cavities where the final part is formed. The design and efficiency of the runner system directly impact the molding process, affecting cycle time, material waste, and the quality of the molded part.

There are two primary types of runner systems: cold runner systems and hot runner systems. Cold runner systems are simpler and consist of a fixed pathway that cools along with the molded part. Once the part is ejected, the solidified runner material is also removed and often reground for reuse. This makes cold runner systems generally less expensive to implement. Hot runner systems, on the other hand, maintain the plastic in a molten state throughout the runner channels until it reaches the gate. This is achieved through heated runner manifolds and nozzles. Hot runner systems eliminate the need to eject and regrind runner material, leading to reduced waste, faster cycle times, and improved part quality, as they can provide more consistent melt temperature and pressure at the gate. However, hot runner systems are more complex and costly to manufacture and maintain.

The choice between a cold and hot runner system depends on various factors, including the type of plastic being processed, the complexity of the part, production volume, and budget considerations. Efficient runner design aims to minimize pressure drop, ensure uniform filling of the cavities, and reduce cooling time.
