Runkoina

Runkoina is a fictional municipality in the northern archipelago of Kaldria. It lies on the coast of the Sinder Sea and includes the town of Runkoina and several outlying villages. The area features a temperate maritime climate with relatively mild summers and cold winters.

Evidence of settlement dates to the 12th century. The community developed as a timber port and shipbuilding center in the early modern period. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the economy diversified into sustainable forestry, crafts, and tourism.

As of 2023, Runkoina has about 1,450 residents. The local economy centers on forestry, fishing, and light manufacturing, with growing emphasis on ecotourism and coastal attractions. Public services include a primary school, a health clinic, and a small library.

The municipality is governed by a seven-member council elected every four years. The official language is Kaldran, with a regional Finnic-influenced dialect spoken by older residents.

Cultural highlights include the Runkoina Lighthouse, the Old Shipyard, and the coastal life exhibit at the Runkoina Museum. The annual Runkoina Summer Festival features folk music, crafts, and sea-oriented ceremonies. A network of walking trails connects coastal and forest viewpoints.

The origin of the name Runkoina is uncertain. One theory connects it to the Finnic word runko, meaning "frame" or "skeleton," in reference to historic shipbuilding and timber framing in the area.
