Rumpusiivilät

Rumpusiivilät, also known as drum screens or rotary screens, are mechanical filtration devices used to separate solids from liquids. They are commonly employed in wastewater treatment plants, industrial processes, and agricultural applications. The fundamental principle involves a cylindrical screen that rotates, allowing liquid to pass through while retaining larger solid particles.

The construction of a typical rumpusiivilä consists of a perforated drum that is inclined at an angle. As the liquid containing suspended solids enters the upper end of the drum, it flows over the inner surface. The rotation of the drum, often driven by a motor, causes the liquid to be propelled outwards through the perforations. Solid materials, being too large to pass through the screen openings, are retained on the inner surface of the drum.

As the drum continues to rotate, the retained solids are carried upwards. Various mechanisms can be employed to remove these solids. Often, a fixed brush or scraper positioned along the top or side of the drum dislodges the accumulated material, causing it to fall into a collection trough. This continuous removal of solids ensures efficient and uninterrupted operation of the screen.

Rumpusiivilät are valued for their simplicity, reliability, and relatively low maintenance requirements. They can handle significant flow rates and are effective in removing a wide range of particle sizes, depending on the screen mesh specification. Their application helps to reduce the organic load in wastewater, recover valuable materials in industrial settings, or pre-treat water for further processing.
