Rullasäätimet, also known as rotary potentiometers or simply "pots," are variable resistors used to control electrical circuits. They are characterized by a rotating shaft that, when turned, alters the resistance between terminals, thereby controlling the flow of current. This continuous adjustment makes them ideal for applications where fine-tuning of a signal is required.

The basic construction of a rullasäädin involves a resistive track, usually made of carbon, ceramic, or a conductive plastic, and a wiper that moves along this track. As the shaft is rotated, the wiper slides across the resistive material, changing the portion of the resistance element in the circuit. This change in resistance directly affects the voltage or current output of the connected circuit.

Rullasäätimet are found in a wide array of electronic devices. Common uses include volume control knobs on audio equipment, dimmers for lights, joystick controls in gaming, and setting parameters in various electronic instruments. Their tactile nature provides intuitive user interaction, making them a popular choice for manual adjustments.

There are different types of rullasäätimet, including linear and logarithmic (or audio taper) potentiometers. Linear potentiometers provide a resistance change that is directly proportional to the rotation angle, while logarithmic potentiometers offer a non-linear change, often used for audio volume where perceived loudness changes logarithmically with power. Multi-turn potentiometers also exist, allowing for many rotations to cover the full range of resistance, offering greater precision for delicate adjustments.
