Rukouksissa

Rukouksissa is a traditional Finnish term that refers to a type of warm bath or sauna-like experience. It is typically taken in the winter months, specifically during the winter solstice, when the shortest days of the year coincide with the cold temperatures. This practice has its roots in ancient Finnish culture and has continued to be observed in various forms to this day.

Historically, rukouksissa was often taken in a remote location, such as a forest or by a frozen lake, where the icy waters and frigid air would expose the participant to intense cold. In preparation, a ritualistic plunge into a cold water bath would be undertaken, followed by a period of recuperation in a relatively warm indoor space. This cycle of exposure to cold and subsequent warming was believed to possess therapeutic benefits for both the body and the spirit.

In contemporary Finland, rukouksissa is no longer practiced in its traditional form, and its cultural significance has been largely lost.
