Ruggedisation

Ruggedisation is the process of designing and manufacturing electronic or mechanical equipment to withstand harsh environmental conditions. These conditions can include extreme temperatures, humidity, shock, vibration, dust, and water ingress. The goal of ruggedisation is to ensure the reliability and longevity of a device in demanding operational scenarios where standard commercial-grade equipment would likely fail.

The methods employed in ruggedisation vary depending on the specific application and the anticipated environmental stresses. Common techniques include the use of robust casings made from materials like reinforced plastics or metals, sealing against moisture and dust (often to specific IP ratings), shock absorption through internal mounting systems or protective padding, and the selection of components rated for wider operating temperature ranges. Vibration resistance is often achieved through careful component selection and secure assembly.

Ruggedised equipment finds applications in a wide array of industries. These include military and defense, where devices must function on battlefields and in extreme climates, and industrial sectors such as manufacturing, oil and gas, and mining, where equipment is exposed to dirt, chemicals, and heavy machinery. Field service, transportation, and public safety are also significant markets for ruggedised devices like tablets, laptops, and communication equipment. The increased durability and reliability offered by ruggedisation often comes at a higher cost compared to standard consumer electronics, but the total cost of ownership can be lower due to reduced failure rates and extended operational life.
