Rubídiumsztrontium refers to the chemical elements rubidium (Rb) and strontium (Sr). This technique utilizes the radioactive decay of the isotope rubidium-87 (⁸⁷Rb) into strontium-87 (⁸⁷Sr). The half-life of ⁸⁷Rb is approximately 48.8 billion years, making it suitable for dating very old rocks and minerals. By measuring the ratio of ⁸⁷Rb to stable strontium isotopes (like ⁸⁶Sr) in a sample, geologists can determine the age of the rock since its formation or crystallization. This method is widely used to date igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, and meteorites, providing crucial information about the Earth's history and the formation of the solar system.

The chemical properties of rubidium and strontium are similar due to their positions in the periodic table. Both are highly reactive metals. Rubidium readily loses one electron to form a +1 ion (Rb⁺), while strontium readily loses two electrons to form a +2 ion (Sr²⁺). They are often found together in minerals, particularly in silicate minerals like feldspars and micas, due to their similar ionic radii and charge.
