Rowntrees

Rowntree's was a British confectionery manufacturer based in York, England. Founded in 1862 by the Rowntree family, it grew from a small chocolate and sweets shop into one of Britain’s leading producers of chocolate and sugar confectionery, operating a large factory complex in York.

Among its best-known products were Kit Kat, Smarties, Yorkie, Aero and Toffee Crisp. These brands remained in production after the company was acquired by Nestlé in 1988, and in most markets are sold under the Nestlé umbrella, with licensing and regional variations applied in some cases.

Rowntree's history reflects a significant chapter in the development of the British confectionery industry, contributing to product innovation and modern marketing. After the acquisition, its brands and operations were integrated into Nestlé's global business, linking York's industrial heritage to a multinational confectionery company.
