Router logs are records generated by network devices such as routers, gateways, and wireless access points. They document events related to system status, connection attempts, traffic flow, and security actions. Depending on the device and configuration, router logs may include information about interface up/down, reboot events, DHCP assignments, NAT translations, firewall decisions, VPN sessions, and error messages.

Typical contents and structure: a timestamp, device identifier, event type, severity, source and destination IP addresses, ports, protocol, and action taken (allowed, denied, dropped). Many devices separate logs into categories such as system logs, firewall or intrusion logs, DHCP logs, and VPN logs. Logs can be stored locally, sent to a centralized log server using syslog or another protocol, or ingested by cloud logging services. Log retention and rotation policies affect how long data is kept and how it is archived.

Uses: Router logs support troubleshooting connectivity and performance issues, security monitoring and incident response, auditing for compliance, and capacity planning. They enable detection of unauthorized access attempts, misconfigurations, or abnormal traffic patterns. Privacy concerns exist because logs may contain IP addresses and other identifiers; security measures should protect log transmission and storage.

Management and best practices: synchronize clocks with a network time protocol to ensure timestamp accuracy; centralize logs for correlation; implement access controls and integrity protections; configure appropriate log levels and event filters; set up alerts for critical events; regularly review and prune logs to comply with retention policies; use tools to parse, search, and visualize logs, and consider privacy regulations when logging personal data.
