RootElement

The rootelement, commonly written as the root element in documentation, refers to the top-level element in a hierarchical data document such as XML or HTML. It is the single element that contains all other elements in the document hierarchy and serves as the root of the element tree.

In XML, the rootelement must appear exactly once; a well-formed XML document cannot have more than one top-level element. The rootelement may include attributes and namespaces and may contain any number of child elements. The choice of rootelement defines the document’s logical structure and often dictates the schema or DTD used to validate it.

In HTML, the document’s root element is the html element, which contains the head and body sections. The DOM provides a documentElement property that refers to this root. While the HTML specification allows certain content to appear outside the html element in parsing, the data structure of a typical HTML document revolves around a single html root element.

Outside of a document, rootelement is also a common parameter name in libraries and frameworks for XML or structured data processing. A rootelement or rootElement value indicates the node to be treated as the starting point for parsing, serialization, or querying (for example, selecting nodes with XPath or transforming the document with XSLT). In code, this concept is often represented by a variable or annotation such as XmlRootElement.

Understanding the rootelement is essential for document validity, namespace binding, and tree traversal, because many operations are defined relative to the root. The term is generally interchangeable with root or document element in common usage, with subtle distinctions depending on the data format and API.
