Rookmelding

Rookmelding is a Dutch term that broadly refers to the signal produced when smoke is detected by a fire detection system or by a smoke detector. The word combines rook (smoke) and melding (notification or signal). In common usage the term can denote the event of detection, the alarm signal itself, or more informally, the device that issues the signal (rookmelder).

In practice, a rookmelding serves to alert occupants to a possible fire or hazardous smoke condition. In residential settings, it is usually an audible alarm, often accompanied by visual indicators, designed to prompt immediate evacuation. In larger buildings or facilities, rookmeldings may be connected to central alarm systems or monitoring services that notify property management or emergency responders.

Rookmeldings come in several types. Standalone devices, such as household smoke detectors (rookmelders), provide local alerts. In commercial environments, networked fire alarm systems may coordinate multiple detectors and call points, generating a centralized rookmelding that triggers alarms throughout the building. Detectors may be based on different sensing technologies, such as ionization or optical (photoelectric) sensing, each with advantages for different fire scenarios. Manual call points can also contribute to a rookmelding when activated by a person.

Maintenance and safety guidance emphasize regular testing, cleaning, and timely replacement of detectors. Many safety organizations advise testing at least monthly, replacing batteries as needed, and replacing units approximately every 8–10 years. Standards and requirements vary by country and jurisdiction, but ensuring a working rookmelding is widely regarded as a key element of fire safety.
