Rollsee

Rollsee is a small lake in the Mecklenburg Lake District in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northern Germany. It is one of many post-glacial lakes that characterize the region and forms part of the area's interconnected system of basins, streams and canals.

Geography and hydrology

The lake occupies a low-lying basin shaped by Pleistocene glaciation and is connected hydrologically to neighbouring water bodies through natural channels and drainage ditches typical of the lake district. Its shoreline is a mix of reed beds, marshy margins and patches of woodland that transition into agricultural land.

Ecology

Rollsee supports a range of freshwater habitats and species common to Mecklenburg lakes, including mixed populations of coarse fish and populations of waterfowl and waders. Littoral vegetation and reedbeds provide breeding and feeding areas for birds and nursery grounds for fish. Surrounding habitats include mixed forest and meadow that add to local biodiversity.

Human use and conservation

The lake and its surroundings are used for low-intensity recreational activities such as angling, birdwatching and non-motorised boating, and the landscape is valued for tourism and leisure. As with many lakes in the region, parts of the shoreline and adjacent wetlands are subject to conservation measures under regional and EU nature-protection frameworks to preserve water quality, habitats and species. Local municipalities manage access and sustainable use to balance recreation with ecological protection.
