Mecklenburg

Mecklenburg is a historic region in northern Germany, comprising the western portion of the modern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern along the Baltic coast. It centers on the former duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz and is known for the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, a large lake district, as well as coastal towns such as Rostock and Schwerin.

In the Middle Ages the region was settled by Slavic Wends and later became part of the Holy Roman Empire. In the early modern period it was divided into the duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a division that persisted until 1918. After World War II the area became part of East Germany, and with German reunification in 1990 it formed part of the reestablished state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which combines the historic Mecklenburg with Western Pomerania.

The economy is centered on agriculture, forestry, and tourism. The Baltic coast attracts visitors to Rostock, Warnemünde, and other seaside towns, while the inland Mecklenburg Lake District draws outdoor enthusiasts. Ports, shipbuilding, wind energy, and services also contribute to the regional economy.

Culturally, Mecklenburg has its own Low German dialect varieties and a heritage of brick Gothic architecture. Notable landmarks include Schwerin Castle and Schwerin Cathedral, as well as the brick churches of Wismar.
