Roller-cone bits, also known as rolling-cutter bits, are a class of rotary drill bits used to drill through rock in oil, gas, and geothermal wells. They cut rock with three rotating cones fitted with cutting elements.

Construction: The bit body is usually steel and houses three cones that rotate on bearings. The cones carry cutting elements either milled teeth (MT) or tungsten carbide inserts (TCI). Bearings can be open-style journal bearings or sealed roller bearings, and some designs include features to reduce whirl or improve lubrication. The gauge and cone profile help determine borehole size and stability.

Operation: Drilling fluid cools the cutters and clears cuttings as the bit operates. The cones rotate on their bearings, and their teeth or inserts shear and crush rock. Bit designers tailor cone angle, tooth type, and bearing arrangement to rock hardness and abrasiveness. Operators adjust weight on bit and rotary speed to optimize cutting.

Variants and usage: The tri-cone bit is the most common form; double-cone and quad-cone designs exist but are less common today. Roller-cone bits are versatile across a wide range of formations, especially where instability or washouts are a concern. For very hard or highly abrasive formations, inserts and hydraulic configurations are chosen to improve wear life and cuttings removal.

Maintenance and performance: Roller-cone bits are typically refurbished after wear, with re-cutting of teeth and inspection of bearings. Selection is based on formation data, drilling parameters, and borehole conditions. They remain widely used in conventional rotary drilling due to their durability and versatility.
