Rokan

Rokan is a name used in Indonesia, especially in the province of Riau on the island of Sumatra. It can refer to natural features as well as administrative areas. The Rokan River, or Sungai Rokan, is a significant waterway in the region and has historically supported local settlements, agriculture, and trade.

The name is also associated with two neighboring regencies in Riau Province: Rokan Hulu Regency and Rokan Hilir Regency. Both regencies derive their names from the river and were established through administrative changes in the late 20th and early 21st centuries to better govern the surrounding areas.

Geography and economy in the Rokan area are shaped by a tropical climate and landscapes that include forests, plantations, and growing infrastructure. The population is ethnically diverse, with Malay communities and others contributing to local culture and commerce. The regencies are connected by roads and, in parts, waterways, supporting transportation and regional development.
