Roiskevoitelu, often translated as splash lubrication, is a method of applying lubricant to moving parts in machinery. It involves a rotating component, such as a gear or a shaft, dipping into a reservoir of oil. As the component rotates, it picks up the oil and splashes it onto other moving surfaces, ensuring they are adequately lubricated. This method is commonly used in gearboxes, engines, and other enclosed machinery where constant lubrication is required for smooth operation and to prevent wear.

The effectiveness of roiskevoitelu depends on several factors, including the speed of the rotating component, the viscosity of the lubricant, and the design of the lubrication system. The oil level in the reservoir is crucial; if too low, insufficient oil will be picked up, leading to dry running. If too high, it can cause excessive drag and splashing, potentially leading to oil leakage or aeration. Baffles or dams are often incorporated into the design to control the oil flow and ensure it reaches the intended areas.

This lubrication technique is relatively simple and cost-effective, making it a popular choice for many industrial applications. It provides continuous lubrication without the need for complex pumping systems. However, it is best suited for applications where the speed is high enough to generate adequate splashing and where the lubricant can be effectively contained within the machinery housing. For very low-speed applications or those requiring precise lubrication, other methods might be more suitable.
