Rocking

Rocking is a form of movement characterized by a repeated back-and-forth or side-to-side motion around a fixed axis. The motion is typically centered on a horizontal pivot near the base and can occur in small or large amplitudes, smooth or abrupt velocities, and with varying damping.

In furniture and objects, the best-known example is the rocking chair, which uses curved rockers to permit smooth, continuous backward and forward motion. Similar devices include rocking stools, rocking horses for children, and rocking cradles used to gently soothe infants. The geometry of the rockers, including the curvature radius and the position of the center of gravity, determines stability and ease of motion.

In culture, "rocking" is commonly used as a verb to describe performing or enjoying rock music or dancing to it, as in "they’re rocking out." The phrase can also refer to a vigorous, rhythmic movement in dancing, such as the rocking step in various partner dances. The term is highly context-dependent and may convey energy, comfort, or soothing in different settings.

In physics and engineering, rocking describes a constrained oscillation about a pivot, studied in dynamics as a simple pendulum-like motion with additional constraints. In developmental contexts, rocking is a natural activity in infancy that aids vestibular stimulation and balance, though prolonged or intense rocking in some settings can raise safety concerns.
