Rizling

Rizling, commonly spelled Riesling, is a white grape variety prized for its high acidity and aromatic character. Although closely associated with Germany, it is grown in numerous wine regions worldwide and appears in a range of styles from dry to very sweet. The variant spelling rizling is used in some languages and regions.

Origins and characteristics: Riesling originated in the Rhine region of present-day Germany. The earliest documented references date from the 15th century. The grape is known for its ability to retain acidity when fully ripe, contributing to its long aging potential and distinctive mineral or petrol notes that often develop with age.

Flavor profile and aging: Young Rieslings typically display green apple, citrus, lime, and floral aromas. As they age, they commonly develop petrol or kerosene notes, along with honeyed and toasty nuances in sweeter styles. The wines are generally light- to medium-bodied and maintain bright acidity, which supports long-term aging.

Styles and regions: Riesling is produced in a wide range of styles. In Germany, classifications such as Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, and Beerenauslese indicate sweetness levels, while trocken versions are common in Pfalz and Rheingau. Alsace and Austria tend toward dry, mineral expressions. In the New World, Australia (notably Clare Valley and Eden Valley), New Zealand, the United States (Washington, Oregon, and Finger Lakes), and Canada (Ontario) emphasize aromatic, high-acid Rieslings.

Food pairing: Riesling pairs well with seafood, poultry, and spicy Asian dishes, as its acidity and, in some styles, sweetness balance heat and rich flavors. It also ages well, often gaining complexity over decades.
