Ristikkäissidoksia, often translated as interlaced or crossed bindings, refers to a group of historical bookbinding techniques where the book's spine is reinforced and decorated by threading cords or bands across the back of the book's text block. These cords are typically attached to the covers of the book, providing structural integrity and a distinctive visual element.

The precise method of interlacing varied across different historical periods and geographical regions. In some cases, cords were passed through holes drilled in the spine, and then woven in a pattern across the exterior of the spine before being secured to the covers. This process not only strengthened the binding but also allowed for elaborate decorative patterns to be created with the cords themselves. The materials used for these cords could include leather, linen, or even gut.

Ristikkäissidoksia were particularly prevalent during the medieval and early Renaissance periods. They are often found on finely bound manuscripts and early printed books, where the quality of the binding was a reflection of the book's importance. The complexity of the interlacing could indicate the skill of the binder and the value of the book.
