Ristikkäisrakenteet, often translated as "truss structures" or "lattice structures," are engineering systems composed of interconnected elements, typically straight and slender, that form a rigid framework. These elements are joined at their ends, forming nodes. The defining characteristic of a truss is that the load applied to the structure is distributed through the members to the supports. In an ideal truss, the joints are assumed to be pinned, meaning they can only transmit axial forces (tension or compression) and not bending moments. This assumption simplifies structural analysis and allows for the efficient use of materials.

The triangular shape is fundamental to truss design because a triangle is inherently a stable geometric figure. When elements are arranged in a series of interconnected triangles, they form a strong and rigid structure capable of spanning significant distances with relatively lightweight components. Common examples of truss structures include bridges, roofs of large buildings and halls, cranes, and radio towers. The design and analysis of trusses rely on principles of statics, often using methods like the method of joints or the method of sections to determine the forces within each member. The efficiency and strength of truss systems make them a popular choice in various engineering applications where load-bearing capacity and material economy are important considerations.
