Riskipääoma

Riskipääoma, commonly translated as venture capital, is equity or equity-like financing provided to early-stage and high-growth companies with substantial potential. It is supplied by specialized funds, angel networks, or corporate venture arms and is usually exchanged for an ownership stake. Beyond funding, riskipääoma providers often offer strategic guidance and governance support.

Investments are made in stages, from seed and start-up to early growth and expansion. Funds are disbursed in tranches tied to milestones. Investors may take board seats or observer rights and negotiate terms such as liquidation preferences or anti-dilution protections.

The objective is high returns from a portfolio of bets. Many investments fail or underperform, but a few successful exits—via IPOs, acquisitions, or secondary sales—can yield substantial gains for the fund.

Riskipääoma complements bank lending and public funding by financing ideas that are too risky for traditional lenders. It supports innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation, and often connects startups with networks, customers, and potential partners.

In Finland, riskipääoma is a common term for venture capital, reflecting a global model in which capital, expertise, and networks are combined to foster growth.
