Riser-based is a term used in the oil and gas industry to describe a type of drilling rig that utilizes a riser system to transport drilling fluid and other materials between the well and the surface. The riser is a vertical pipe that extends from the drilling rig to the wellhead, providing a conduit for the flow of drilling mud, which is used to cool and lubricate the drill bit, remove cuttings, and maintain wellbore pressure. This system is particularly useful in deepwater and offshore drilling operations, where the riser can be equipped with various safety features such as blowout preventers and emergency disconnect systems to ensure the safety of personnel and the environment.

The riser-based drilling method can be further categorized into two main types: dynamic positioning (DP) and tension leg platform (TLP). DP rigs are equipped with thrusters that allow them to maintain their position over the well, regardless of sea conditions. TLPs, on the other hand, are semi-submersible platforms that use tensioned tethers to maintain their position and stability. Both systems have their advantages and are chosen based on factors such as water depth, environmental conditions, and specific project requirements.

Riser-based drilling has several advantages, including improved safety, better control of wellbore pressure, and the ability to handle more complex drilling operations. However, it also presents challenges such as the need for specialized equipment, higher operational costs, and potential risks associated with deepwater and offshore environments.
