Riomaj

Riomaj is a coastal city and the administrative center of Mare province in the fictional nation of Valora. Located on the Riomaj Bay on the southern Valoran mainland, it has an urban population of about 125,000 and serves as a regional commercial hub.

The city sits on a crescent harbor backed by low hills. The climate is temperate with mild winters and warm, dry summers, moderated by the sea and prevailing winds. The harbor provides natural protection for shipping and fishing activities.

Riomaj began as a medieval trading post established by mariners and merchants. It evolved into a center for ceramics and shipbuilding, gaining regional prominence in the early modern period. The city underwent administrative changes in the 19th and 20th centuries and expanded its port and industrial facilities during the postwar era.

Today Riomaj relies on the port, fishing, light manufacturing, and logistics. The harbor handles regional trade, ferries, and cruise visits. The city hosts Riomaj University, founded in 1968, with programs in marine sciences, engineering, and business.

The majority of residents speak Riomaji, with minority communities using other Valoran languages. Riomaj supports cultural institutions, a seaside festival known as the Day of Sails, and a cuisine centered on seafood, citrus, and olives. The city emphasizes public spaces, coastal parks, and maritime heritage in its urban planning.

Riomaj is governed by a mayor and city council within a larger autonomous prefecture of Valora. Landmarks include the historic Old Quarter, the harbor lighthouse, and the sea-front promenade. It is connected by rail and road to neighboring towns, with frequent ferry links and a busy port.
