Rintakehähengitys

Rintakehähengitys, also known as thoracic breathing or chest breathing, is a type of respiration where the primary muscles involved are those of the chest wall. This contrasts with diaphragmatic breathing, where the diaphragm plays the dominant role. In rintakehähengitys, inhalation is achieved by the contraction of the intercostal muscles, which lift the rib cage upwards and outwards, increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity. Expiration is typically passive, occurring as these muscles relax and the elastic recoil of the lungs and chest wall pushes air out.

This breathing pattern is often associated with states of stress or heightened arousal. When a person feels anxious or threatened, their breathing may become shallower and faster, relying more on the chest muscles. While it is a natural response in certain situations, a consistent reliance on rintakehähengitys can lead to perceived shortness of breath, muscle tension in the neck and shoulders, and can be less efficient in oxygenating the blood compared to diaphragmatic breathing.

Recognizing and consciously shifting towards diaphragmatic breathing is often recommended for relaxation and improved respiratory function. This involves engaging the diaphragm, which descends during inhalation, allowing for a fuller expansion of the lungs and a more relaxed breathing pattern. Practices like yoga and meditation often emphasize the importance of diaphragmatic breathing as a tool for stress management and overall well-being.
