The primary goal of these methods is to reduce the environmental impact of sulfur, particularly sulfur dioxide (SO2), which is a major contributor to acid rain and respiratory problems.

There are several categories of rikinpoistomenetelmät. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is a prominent example, applied to the exhaust gases from power plants and other industrial facilities. Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) is a common chemical process used in oil refineries, where sulfur compounds in crude oil are reacted with hydrogen under high pressure and temperature in the presence of a catalyst to produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is then removed.
