These relationships are often represented as a tree structure, where the root is the main verb or predicate of the sentence, and other words branch off as dependents.

The core idea behind dependency analysis is that sentences can be understood as a set of pairwise dependencies between words. For instance, in the sentence "The cat sat on the mat," dependency analysis would identify that "cat" is the subject of "sat," and "mat" is the object of the preposition "on," which in turn depends on "sat." Different types of dependencies can be identified, such as subject-verb, verb-object, adjectival modifiers, and adverbial modifiers.

Dependency analysis plays a crucial role in various natural language processing tasks. It is fundamental for understanding sentence meaning, enabling applications like machine translation, information extraction, question answering, and sentiment analysis.
