Right-wingers are individuals or groups that align with the political right, a broad category in which political positions emphasize tradition, social order, and a preference for limited or market-oriented economic policy, though the meaning of 'right' varies across countries and historical periods. In many democracies, the right encompasses several currents, including economic conservatives who advocate free markets, lower taxes, and a smaller welfare state; social conservatives who emphasize traditional values, religious or cultural norms, and sometimes opposition to rapid social change; and nationalist or right-wing populist currents that prioritize national sovereignty, restrictive immigration, and strong law and order policies. Libertarian-right variants advocate minimal state intervention in both the economy and personal life.

Characteristics and policy positions often associated with right-wing groups include support for market-oriented economic policies, private property, and limited government; preference for national defense and secure borders; and emphasis on social cohesion and institutional continuity. However, the spectrum ranges from mainstream conservative parties to more radical groups, and the label can be applied differently in different contexts.

In practice, 'right-wing' is a relative term tied to specific political rivalries. In some regions, right-wing parties participate in government through coalition or majoritarian systems; in others, they are opposition movements or fringe groups. Critics argue some right-wing movements promote exclusionary nationalism or resistance to reforms, while supporters contend they defend tradition, national identity, and fiscal discipline.

Notable variations include economic conservatives, social or religious conservatives, liberal-conservatives who favor free markets with traditional social norms, and nationalist-right movements that blend cultural traditionalism with restrictive immigration policies.
