Riffelsee

Riffelsee is a glacial lake located near the Gornergrat in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is situated at an elevation of 2,757 meters (9,045 feet) above sea level. The lake is renowned for its stunning reflections of the Matterhorn, especially on clear and calm days. This picturesque scenery makes Riffelsee a popular destination for hikers and photographers.

The lake is easily accessible via the Gornergrat Railway, which stops at the Riffelberg station. From Riffelberg, a short hike of approximately 30 minutes leads to Riffelsee. The trail is well-maintained and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. The optimal time to visit for reflections is typically in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and the water is less disturbed by wind.

Riffelsee is part of the Mattertal valley and lies within the protected landscape of the Swiss Alps. The area is characterized by alpine flora and fauna, although the lake itself is quite barren due to its high altitude and harsh climate. The water is fed by melting snow and glaciers, and its temperature remains very cold throughout the year. The presence of the iconic Matterhorn mirrored in its waters has cemented Riffelsee's status as one of the most photographed spots in the Swiss Alps.
