Retseptoritesse, often translated as receptors, are specialized molecules or cellular structures that detect and respond to specific stimuli. These stimuli can be chemical, mechanical, thermal, or radiant. Receptors are crucial for organisms to interact with their environment and maintain internal homeostasis. They are the initial point of contact for sensory information, translating external or internal signals into cellular responses.

In biology, receptors are commonly proteins. They can be located on the surface of a cell membrane, within the cytoplasm, or inside the nucleus. The binding of a specific molecule, known as a ligand, to its corresponding receptor triggers a cascade of events within the cell.
