Retinalynnä

Retinalynnä is a term used in optometry and ophthalmology to describe a subjective visual phenomenon. It refers to the perception of a faint, often ephemeral, shimmering or luminous line or band of light. This line can appear in various colors, most commonly white, but sometimes also blue or green. The experience is typically brief and can occur in different parts of the visual field.

The exact cause of retinalynnä is not fully understood, but it is generally considered to be a harmless physiological event related to the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It is thought to be a result of spontaneous or transient electrical activity within the retinal neurons, particularly the photoreceptor cells or the bipolar cells. These brief bursts of activity can be misinterpreted by the brain as a visual stimulus, even in the absence of external light.

Retinalynnä is often triggered or exacerbated by certain conditions. These include rapid eye movements, such as those that occur during waking up or falling asleep. Blinking forcefully, or experiencing bright lights followed by darkness, can also sometimes precede or accompany the appearance of retinalynnä. It is important to distinguish retinalynnä from more serious visual disturbances, such as those associated with retinal detachment or migraine aura, which often present with more persistent, distorted, or flashing lights.
