Resistenstesting is an umbrella term used to describe procedures that assess the degree to which a subject demonstrates resistance to a particular challenge. The term is not standardized and its meaning varies across disciplines, but in general it denotes evaluating whether, and to what extent, resistance exists against a specified stimulus or condition.

In microbiology and clinical medicine, resistance testing often refers to antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Laboratory methods determine whether a microorganism is susceptible, intermediate, or resistant to antibiotics or antifungal drugs. Common approaches include disk diffusion (Kirby-Bauer), broth microdilution to establish minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), and gradient methods such as Etest. Results inform treatment choices and contribute to surveillance of resistance patterns. Guidelines from bodies like CLSI and EUCAST frame interpretation, quality control, and reporting.

In materials science and electrical engineering, resistance testing measures how a material or device resists electrical current. Techniques include direct resistance measurements, four-point probe methods for sheet resistance, and impedance spectroscopy. Such tests support quality control, material characterization, and reliability assessments under varying temperatures, humidity, or mechanical stress.

In information technology and cybersecurity, resistance testing can describe evaluating defense capabilities against simulated threats or high-stress scenarios. This may involve red-team exercises, stress testing, or fault-injection to assess resilience and recovery.
