Reseptoriryhmät refer to classifications of receptors based on their structure, function, or the type of stimulus they respond to. In biology, receptors are proteins that detect specific molecules or changes in the environment and initiate a cellular response. These classifications help scientists understand how organisms perceive the world and how cells communicate.

One common way to group receptors is by the type of stimulus they detect. Mechanoreceptors respond to mechanical pressure or distortion, such as those in the skin that detect touch and pressure, or in the inner ear that detect sound vibrations. Chemoreceptors detect chemical stimuli, like taste and smell receptors, or receptors that monitor blood oxygen levels. Photoreceptors are sensitive to light, found in the eyes. Thermoreceptors detect temperature changes, both hot and cold. Nociceptors are specialized receptors that signal pain, often triggered by tissue damage.

Another classification is based on their location. Exteroceptors receive stimuli from the external environment, while interoceptors respond to stimuli from within the body, such as blood pressure or internal organ states. Proprioceptors are found in muscles, tendons, and joints, providing information about body position and movement.

Receptors can also be grouped by their molecular structure and signaling pathway. For example, G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are a large family of transmembrane receptors that activate intracellular G proteins upon ligand binding. Ion channel receptors, such as ligand-gated ion channels, directly alter ion permeability across the cell membrane when activated. Intracellular receptors are located within the cell and bind to lipophilic ligands that can cross the cell membrane. Understanding these receptor groups is fundamental to fields like neuroscience, pharmacology, and physiology.
