Renkaasuuntautuma, often translated as "tire orientation" or "tire direction," refers to the correct rotational direction of a tire when mounted onto a vehicle. Many performance tires and directional tires are designed with a specific tread pattern that is optimized to work in one direction of rotation only. This directional design is crucial for several reasons, including water evacuation, handling, and noise reduction.

When a directional tire is mounted incorrectly, meaning it spins in the opposite direction for which it was designed, its performance characteristics can be severely compromised. The sipes and grooves that are intended to channel water away from the contact patch might instead direct it towards the center of the tire, increasing the risk of hydroplaning. Furthermore, the tire's ability to grip the road in both dry and wet conditions can be diminished, leading to reduced stability and potentially affecting braking distances.
