Remstelsel

Remstelsel is a Dutch term that translates to "braking system" in English. It refers to the mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical components that work together to slow down or stop a moving vehicle. The primary purpose of a remstelsel is to convert the kinetic energy of the vehicle into heat through friction, thereby reducing its speed.

The fundamental components of most modern remstelsels include the brake pedal, which the driver actuates, a master cylinder that converts mechanical force into hydraulic pressure, brake lines that carry the hydraulic fluid, and the braking mechanisms at each wheel. These mechanisms typically involve brake discs and pads (disc brakes) or brake drums and shoes (drum brakes). When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic fluid is pushed through the lines, applying force to the brake pads which then press against the rotating brake discs, or to the brake shoes which press against the inside of the rotating brake drums.

Advanced remstelsels may incorporate anti-lock braking systems (ABS), which prevent wheel lock-up during heavy braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control. Electronic stability control (ESC) and traction control systems also often integrate with the remstelsel to enhance vehicle safety and handling.
