Remasterisering

Remasterisering is the process of creating a new version of an audio, video or digital product from the original master source. The goal is to improve perceived quality, correct defects or adapt the material to newer formats and playback devices. In film and television, remasterisering typically involves digitizing analog film, removing scratches, correcting color fading, and applying high‑definition stabilization. Audio remasterisering may include equalization, dynamic range compression, stereo expansion, and removal of hiss or pops. In video games, remasterisering often refers to re‑rendering textures, increasing frame rates, adding higher resolution assets and updated user interface elements while preserving the original gameplay.

The remasterisering workflow usually begins with a thorough assessment of the source material. For analogue media, high‑resolution scanning or tape transfer is performed. Digital sources may be cleaned and restored using forensic image and sound editing software. Color grading teams apply new colour profiles to enhance contrast and colour accuracy. Audio engineers re‑mix or re‑master tracks with modern loudness standards. Finally, the output is formatted for distribution, which might include Blu‑ray, streaming services, or hardware‑specific releases.

Remasterisering is distinct from remaking; a remake recreates the work with new performances or re‑written scripts, whereas a remaster retains the original content. Fans and critics sometimes debate the artistic value of remasters, with some citing loss of the original's aesthetic or the "cleanliness" being too much. Nonetheless, remasterisering allows older works to be experienced by newer audiences and preserves media that might otherwise degrade.
