Relieftrükis

Relieftrükis, also known as relief printing, is one of the oldest methods of printing. It is a process where the image is created by inking a raised surface and then pressing it onto paper or another substrate. The areas that are intended to print are left in relief, while the non-printing areas are cut away. This creates a textured effect where the ink only adheres to the raised parts.

Historically, woodcuts were a prominent form of relief printing. In this technique, an image is carved into a block of wood, with the artist cutting away the areas that should not be printed. The remaining raised surface is then inked and used to make impressions. Other materials like linoleum, metal, and even rubber can be used for relief printing, each offering different characteristics and applications.

The process involves several steps. First, the design is created on the printing block. Then, the block is carved, leaving the image in raised relief. Next, ink is applied to the raised surface using a roller or brayer. Finally, the inked block is pressed onto the paper or other material, transferring the ink and creating the printed image. Relief printing can be done by hand or with a printing press. It is known for its bold lines and textured quality, often used for posters, book illustrations, and artistic prints.
