Relaxin and insulin-like peptides are a group of structurally related hormones that play significant roles in physiological processes, particularly in reproduction, metabolism, and tissue remodeling. Relaxin is a peptide hormone primarily associated with pregnancy and parturition in mammals. Insulin-like peptides, including insulin and insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), are part of a broader family of hormones that regulate glucose metabolism and growth. Insulin, secreted by pancreatic beta cells, lowers blood glucose levels by facilitating glucose uptake into cells and inhibiting gluconeogenesis. The IGFs, primarily IGF-1 and IGF-2, mediate growth and cellular proliferation through interactions with their receptors, influencing development, metabolism, and tissue maintenance.

Despite their functional differences, relaxin and insulin-like peptides share structural similarities, particularly in their three-dimensional conformation, which includes a characteristic triple-loop structure stabilized by disulfide bonds. This structural resemblance has led to the classification of these peptides as part of the insulin/relaxin superfamily. Research into these hormones has expanded understanding of their roles in health and disease, including their potential involvement in conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and reproductive complications.
