Reinigungsöle

Reinigungsöle, also known as cleansing oils, are a type of facial cleanser designed to effectively remove makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum from the skin. They are typically formulated with a base of various oils, which can include mineral oil, plant-based oils like jojoba, olive, or sunflower oil, and emulsifiers. The emulsifiers are crucial as they allow the oil to mix with water, transforming into a milky lotion when rinsed, thereby preventing a greasy residue.

The principle behind cleansing oils is "like dissolves like." Oil-based impurities on the skin, such as makeup and sebum, are soluble in the cleansing oil. When massaged onto dry skin, the oil binds with these impurities, lifting them from the pores. Upon contact with water, the emulsifiers activate, creating a temporary emulsion that rinses away the dissolved impurities and the cleansing oil itself.

Reinigungsöle are often praised for their ability to remove stubborn makeup, including waterproof mascara and long-wear foundation, without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. Many users find them gentle and suitable for various skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin, as they can help rebalance sebum production. They are frequently used as the first step in a double cleansing routine, followed by a water-based cleanser to ensure thorough cleansing.
