Rein

A rein is a strap or pair of straps used to direct and control a horse or other riding animal. Reins are attached to the animal’s bit or headgear and are held by the rider to communicate signals. They allow the rider to influence direction, speed, and stopping.

Reins come in various materials and styles. They are commonly made of leather or synthetic fibers such as nylon. The English and Western riding disciplines typically use two reins, though single reins or split reins are also common in some training and working contexts. Types include plain reins, split reins (which divide into two strands), and laced or braided reins; some styles, like romal reins, have decorative ends. Alongside traditional reins, leading or lunge lines are used for groundwork and longeing.

In use, the rider applies gentle, timely pressure on the appropriate reins to cue the horse. Pressure on both reins together or on the correct rein with subtle releases helps steer and slow or stop the animal. Effective rein work relies on harmony between rein cues, weight, leg aids, and the horse’s response. Reins are part of a bridle or halter system, and handling technique varies with riding style and training level.

Etymology and metaphorically, the word rein refers to the actual strap and the control it affords. The verb phrase rein in means to curb or limit something, and “to take the reins” or “the reins” are common idioms for assuming or exercising control or leadership.
