Core components include physical rehabilitation (improving mobility, strength, balance), occupational therapy (daily living activities), speech and language therapy (communication and swallowing), cognitive rehabilitation (memory, attention, problem solving), and psychosocial support. Assistive devices, prosthetics, orthotics, and adaptive technologies may enable independence. Vocational rehabilitation helps people return to work, school, or community roles.

Care is delivered across settings, from acute hospitals to inpatient rehabilitation facilities, outpatient clinics, and community or home-based programs. A comprehensive assessment identifies impairments and activity limitations, followed by goal-directed treatment. Progress is monitored with standardized measures, and plans are adjusted accordingly to maximize function and participation.

Rehabilitation aims to reduce disability, improve quality of life, and promote social and economic participation. Access and outcomes can be influenced by health system structure, resource availability, and individual factors such as age, comorbidity, and social support.
