Refraktoreiden

Refraktoreiden, commonly known as refracting telescopes, are optical instruments that use lenses to form an image. They work by bending light rays through a primary objective lens, which is a large convex lens at the front of the telescope. This lens gathers light from a distant object and focuses it to create a magnified image at the eyepiece. The eyepiece, another lens or combination of lenses, then further magnifies this image for the observer.

The fundamental principle behind a refractor is refraction, the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another, in this case, from air into the glass of the objective lens. The focal length of the objective lens determines the telescope's magnification and its light-gathering power. Longer focal lengths generally result in higher magnification.

Refracting telescopes are known for producing sharp, clear images with high contrast, as the light path is generally free of the obstructions found in other telescope designs like reflectors. They are also relatively simple to operate and maintain, often requiring little adjustment once set up. However, refractors can suffer from chromatic aberration, a phenomenon where different colors of light are refracted at slightly different angles, leading to color fringing around objects. This is typically minimized in more advanced designs by using multiple lenses made of different types of glass.

Due to their optical clarity and robust construction, refractor telescopes are popular for observing the Moon and planets, as well as for terrestrial viewing.
