Refractometrie

Refractometrie, or refractometry, is a measurement technique used to determine the refractive index of a substance by observing how light bends as it passes from one medium into another. The refractive index, denoted n, characterizes how fast light travels in the material and depends on wavelength and temperature.

In practice, refractometry is performed with refractometers. Older, optical instruments such as the Abbe refractometer measure the critical angle of refraction to obtain n at a standard wavelength, typically around 589 nm. Modern digital and handheld refractometers can directly display the refractive index or related scales, such as BRIX for sugar solutions. Measurements are commonly reported at a reference temperature (often 20 °C) because refractive index changes with temperature.

Refractometry finds wide use for determining concentration and quality in liquids, identifying substances, and characterizing materials. In foods and beverages, it is used to assess sugar content, syrup quality, and purity. In pharmaceuticals and chemicals, it aids concentration checks and material identification. In gemology and mineralogy, refractive index helps distinguish gemstones. In polymers and glasses, it contributes to material characterization and quality control.

Limitations include the need for a transparent or hazy-free sample, as turbidity or particulates scatter light and reduce accuracy. The refractive index is wavelength-dependent (dispersion), so measurements are specified for a given wavelength. Temperature effects are significant and require compensation or reporting n at a standard temperature.
