Reflektivbanden

Reflektivbanden are flat strips of retroreflective material designed to reflect light back toward its source, increasing visibility in low-light conditions. They are widely used on clothing, bags, equipment, and vehicles to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and workers.

Most bands consist of a retroreflective layer—either microprismatic or glass-bead based—applied to a flexible backing such as vinyl, polyester, or fabric. They are available as sew-on tapes, iron-on patches, or self-adhesive strips, and come in widths typically ranging from about 2 to 5 centimeters, with stretch variants for arms and legs. Colors are usually silver/white for maximum reflectivity, though colored reflective options exist for specialized applications.

Principle and use: The bands do not emit light; they reflect incident light back toward the source, making the wearer more visible to drivers and other observers at night or in poor weather. Their effectiveness depends on placement, angle, and the condition of the material.

Standards and regulation: Standards govern performance and usage. In Europe, high-visibility clothing standards such as EN 20471 apply to clothing, and retroreflective materials are addressed in related standards such as EN 13356. In the United States, retroreflective materials are described by ASTM D4956 and related specifications. Compliance ensures minimum reflectivity and performance at specified observation angles.

Care and durability: Reflective bands may wear down with abrasion, washing, and sun exposure. Many are designed for multiple wash cycles, but brightness can decline over time, necessitating replacement to maintain effectiveness.
