The principle involves comparing the leakage rate of a test object against that of a known, calibrated reference standard. This standard, often referred to as a "reference leak" or "master leak," is designed to have a precisely defined and stable leakage rate under specific test conditions.

During a referenzleckprüfung, both the test object and the reference leak are subjected to the same pressure and temperature conditions. The leakage of gas or fluid from each is then measured. By comparing the measured leakage from the test object to that of the reference leak, a highly accurate determination of the test object's integrity can be made.
