ReedereiRichtlinien are a set of standards and best‑practice guidelines that maritime operators in Germany use to ensure that shipping companies comply with national and international regulations. The term combines the German words *Reederei* (shipping line) and *Richtlinien* (guidelines). They address operational, safety, environmental and administrative aspects of commercial shipping.

The guidelines emerged in the early 1990s as part of an effort by the Federal Ministry of Transport and the German Maritime Administration to harmonise German shipping practice with the maritime conventions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). They supplement, rather than replace, the legal framework laid out in the German Merchant Shipping Act (Handelsgesetzbuch) and the Marine Safety Act. At the same time, they align with global instruments such as the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and the International Convention on the Navigation of Merchant Ships (ICNMTS).

ReedereiRichtlinien cover areas such as vessel documentation, crew training, cargo handling procedures, emergency preparedness, environmental protection, and reporting requirements. Shipping lines are expected to adopt the guidelines in a manner that is consistent with their organisational structure and fleet. Compliance is monitored by the two German authorities responsible for maritime safety – the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) and the relevant regional maritime offices.

These guidelines help to reduce operational risk, protect marine ecosystems, and improve the competitiveness of German shipping companies in the global market.
