Redundanttijärjestelmät, known in English as redundant systems or fault-tolerant systems, are designed to ensure continued operation even if one or more components fail. The core principle is to have backup or duplicate components that can take over the function of a failing part without interruption of service. This is crucial for systems where downtime is unacceptable or has severe consequences.

There are several common strategies for implementing redundancy. One is n-version programming, where multiple independent versions of a software module are developed and executed. If one version produces an incorrect result, the others can still provide the correct output. Another approach is hardware redundancy, which can involve having duplicate servers, power supplies, or network connections. For example, in a server cluster, if one server fails, another immediately takes over its workload.

Redundancy can also be implemented at the data level. This includes techniques like RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) for data storage, where data is spread across multiple hard drives in a way that allows for data recovery in case of a drive failure. Another example is in telecommunications, where backup communication lines are maintained to ensure connectivity.

The level of redundancy required depends on the criticality of the system. Critical infrastructure, financial systems, and aerospace applications often employ high levels of redundancy to minimize the risk of failure. While redundancy enhances reliability, it also increases complexity and cost due to the need for extra hardware, software, and management. However, the benefits of uninterrupted operation and data integrity often outweigh these drawbacks.
