Realtidsnätverk, or real-time networks, are communication systems designed to transmit data with minimal delay and high reliability. The primary characteristic of a real-time network is its ability to guarantee that data packets arrive within a specified time frame, often referred to as a deadline. This is crucial for applications where even slight delays can have significant consequences.

These networks are typically built upon specific networking protocols and hardware designed for low latency and jitter. Technologies like Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) are often employed to achieve deterministic communication. TSN is a set of IEEE 802 standards that enable precise timing, traffic shaping, and fault tolerance within Ethernet networks. This allows for the scheduling of critical data packets to ensure they meet their deadlines, even in the presence of other network traffic.

Applications that benefit from real-time networks are diverse. Industrial automation is a major user, where precise synchronization of robots, sensors, and control systems is essential for efficient and safe operation. Other examples include autonomous vehicles, which require rapid exchange of sensor data and control commands, and advanced telecommunications systems, such as those used for high-definition video conferencing or remote surgery. The ability to guarantee timely data delivery is what distinguishes real-time networks from traditional best-effort networks, where delivery time is not guaranteed.
