Reaksjonærer

Reaksjonærer refers to a group of Christian organizations and individuals in Norway who emerged as a counter-reaction to the teachings of Hans Nielsen Hauge and other rationalist and revivalist movements within the Lutheran Church of Norway in the early 19th century. Hauge's movement emphasized individual interpretation of the Bible, lay leadership, and revivalist practices, which were seen as a threat to traditional church authority.

The reaksjonærer movement was characterized by a return to more traditional and conservative elements within the Lutheran Church. They rejected the rationalist and individualistic tendencies of the Haugean movement, advocating instead for a more formal, liturgical, and hierarchical approach to worship and church governance. The movement was also influenced by romanticism and nationalism, and its adherents often emphasized the importance of preserving traditional Norwegian culture and the role of the church in promoting national identity.

During the 1830s and 1840s, the reaksjonærer movement gained significant influence within the Norwegian Lutheran Church, leading to the establishment of a more conservative and traditional form of worship and church governance. However, the movement was also associated with resistance to the growing influence of rationalism and liberalism within Norway, and its adherents were often seen as conservative and reactionary by their opponents. Despite this, the reaksjonærer movement played an important role in shaping the development of the Lutheran Church in Norway and continues to influence the church's practices and ideology to this day.
