Reaalajasüsteemis, often translated as "real-time system" in English, refers to a computing system where the correctness of an operation depends not only on the logical result but also on the time at which the result is produced. In simpler terms, these systems must respond to events within a guaranteed timeframe.

The primary characteristic of a reaalajasüsteemis is its time-bound execution. Unlike general-purpose computers that aim for optimal average performance, real-time systems prioritize predictability and determinism. This means they must meet strict deadlines for processing tasks. Failure to do so can lead to system malfunction or catastrophic outcomes, depending on the application.

Streaming media players and online gaming are examples of soft real-time applications.
