Rayia

Rayia is a fictional coastal city in the continent of Aelara. Located on the Leth River delta and facing the Bay of Neris, Rayia is a regional commercial hub known for its granaries, shipyards, and markets. The city covers about 60 square kilometers and has a population of roughly 140,000. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and warm summers, moderated by sea winds.

Established as a fishing village in the early medieval period, Rayia grew through river and sea trade. By the 14th century it reached a golden age as a mercantile republic, benefiting from overland caravans and seaborne routes. It endured sieges in 1423 and 1527 but recovered, later entering a federation of autonomous cities in the 18th century. Its historic center preserves arcaded streets and salt-blast architecture.

Rayia is governed by a mayor and council elected from merchant and guild families, with a regional assembly representing districts. The economy centers on port trade, grain and rice storage, shipbuilding, textiles, and crafts. In recent decades it has diversified into logistics, tourism, and light manufacturing, with the harbor handling general cargo and ferries to nearby islands.

The Rayian language, allied with the regional trade language, coexists with minority dialects. The city hosts annual festivals such as the Harvest of Light and the Sea Lanterns. Landmarks include the Harbor Gate, the Grand Market, and the Library of Leth. Education is anchored by Rayia University and several technical institutes.
